GTA 6 police and the wanted system

Rockstar has not published a breakdown of how policing works in GTA 6. What it has published is An Extended Look, 27 minutes of footage released on 27 August 2026, and a decent chunk of that is police pursuit with the HUD visible. Everything below was read off those frames. Where a claim rests on something on screen, the frame is directly underneath it.

The wanted level goes to six stars

Every Grand Theft Auto since GTA III has capped police attention at five stars. GTA V used five. Red Dead Redemption 2 used five. The pursuit footage in the Extended Look shows six.

Six positions, four lit. Two unfilled stars sit to the left of the four active ones, so this is a four star chase on a six star scale, not a maxed out one. Underneath sit four round markers that no previous game has had.

The four icons under the stars

These are new to the series. Left to right they depict two overlapping figures, a coat hanger, a single face, and a car.

What is confirmed and what is not. That those four icons exist, and what each one depicts, is visible on screen and not in dispute. What they actually do is not confirmed anywhere. Rockstar has not explained them and we are not going to invent an explanation, because you can already find a dozen sites stating their function with total confidence and no source.

The reasonable reading, offered as a reading and nothing more: they look like a record of what the police know about you. Who saw you, what you are wearing, what your face looks like, and what you are driving. If that is what they are, then escaping a chase becomes about breaking whichever of those things is identifying you, changing clothes or swapping cars, rather than only outrunning a search radius. That would be a real departure from how GTA V handled it.

The hanger icon appears in a second place

Rockstar's own full quality release resolves a menu the compressed stream could not. Pausing on the items wheel shows a Masks category with a face wrap, sunglasses, a cap, and a clothing slot. The glyph on that clothing slot is the same coat hanger used in the wanted HUD.

The items wheel. Weapons and Items tabs, a Masks category, and four wearable slots. The hanger, bottom right, carries the same symbol as the third marker in the wanted row. Also visible: three status bars rather than the usual two, and two separate money values.

That is a link between two systems rather than a guess about one. The game uses one symbol for the clothes you can put on and for whatever the police are tracking, which makes the disguise reading of that icon considerably more likely. It still is not confirmation of what the marker does in a chase, and we are still not going to claim it is.

Two smaller things the same frame gives up. There are three status bars, not two: health, stamina, and a third marked with an eye. And money is split across two values rather than one balance.
