What is confirmed, what is reported, what is unknown
GTA 6 frame rate: what is actually confirmed
Search for this and nearly every result tells you flatly that GTA 6 is 30fps with no 60fps mode. That is very probably true. It is also not something Rockstar has published, and the difference matters if you are deciding whether to buy a PS5 Pro over it.
Who actually said it
The source is Rob Nelson, head of development and co-studio head at Rockstar North, speaking to a YouTuber during preview coverage around the Extended Look. He said the game is currently running at 30fps on console, and that he would need to check with the technical team about whether a 60fps option lands at launch or afterwards.
That is a senior Rockstar person on the record, which is why the reporting is credible. It is still an interview remark rather than a Rockstar announcement, which is why the more careful outlets have been writing "reportedly" and "undecided" while the rest dropped the hedge. We are not going to drop it either.
One thing we can check ourselves
Rockstar published the Extended Look as an uncompressed file on its own site. We measured it rather than assuming:
| Property | Rockstar's own file |
|---|---|
| Resolution | 3840 x 2160 |
| Frame rate | 30.00, constant |
| Frames / duration | 48,242 frames over 1,608.07 seconds |
| Bit rate | about 70 Mbps |
Exactly 30, not 29.97 and not a variable rate. This does not prove the game runs at 30fps. A studio can capture at 60 and deliver at 30, and showcase footage is edited. What it does show is that Rockstar chose to present 27 minutes of its own gameplay at 30fps in 4K, which is consistent with what Nelson said rather than evidence against it.
Where each claim actually stands
| Claim | Status |
|---|---|
| Runs at 30fps on PS5 and Xbox Series X and S | Reported Rob Nelson in a preview interview, not a Rockstar release |
| Rockstar's Extended Look file is 4K, constant 30fps | Measured by us, from Rockstar's own download |
| A 60fps performance mode at launch | Unknown described as undecided by Nelson |
| Anything specific about PS5 Pro | Unknown no statement either way |
| Xbox Series S behaviour | Unknown never addressed |
| A PC version, and what it would run at | Unknown no PC release announced at all |
Why 30 is plausible
Nothing about this is surprising for a launch window Rockstar game. GTA 5 shipped at 30 on the consoles of its day and Red Dead Redemption 2 did the same. The Extended Look shows dense crowds, heavy traffic, weather and water simulation all running at once, and those are exactly the costs that make a locked 60 expensive. A studio that has not committed to a performance mode twelve weeks out is usually a studio still measuring one.
What would settle it
A Rockstar Newswire post, a store listing naming a performance mode, or the technical specifications that normally appear closer to launch. When any of those land it goes on our news page, sourced. Until then this page says reported, because that is what it is.
Frame rate, resolution and duration measured from Rockstar's own uncompressed release of Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look. The 30fps remark is attributed to Rob Nelson via preview coverage, and is reported rather than officially published. Grand Theft Auto VI is a trademark of Take-Two Interactive. This site is unofficial.
