GTA 5 Money Guide

The best ways to actually make money in GTA 5, split into Story Mode and GTA Online. No fake cheat codes, no glitches that get patched next week, just the methods that have held up for years.

The one thing to know. There is no money cheat in GTA 5, in Story Mode or Online. Anything promising a free money code is fake. In Story Mode the real money comes from the stock market; in Online it comes from heists and businesses.

Part one

Story Mode

Single-player money is all about one trick, and a few smaller ones to get you started.

BEST METHOD

Lester's assassinations + the stock market

This is the closest thing to infinite money in Story Mode. As you play through the story, Lester gives you a set of assassination missions. Do not rush them. Finish the whole story first, including the final heist, then complete the assassinations one at a time. Before each hit, put every dollar all three characters have into the company the target's death will affect, carry out the assassination, and sell once the stock peaks a day or two later. Reinvest the profit into the next hit. Done in the right order with the maximum invested each time, this snowballs a few million into well over a billion per character.

The key detail people miss: save every assassination except the first (The Hotel Assassination, which the story forces early) until after The Big Score, when you have the most cash to invest.

The Big Score (the final heist)

The story's last heist is a huge lump sum on its own, paying out tens of millions to each character. Pick the Obvious approach for the larger take and bring a cheap gunman so you keep more of the cut. This is also the money you then pour into the assassination method above, so run the two together.

Quick early-game earners

  • Armored trucks: shoot open the rear doors, roughly 5,000 dollars each, they respawn around the map.
  • Underwater hidden packages: briefcases of cash on the ocean floor.
  • Store robberies: hold up convenience stores for a few hundred each.
  • Strangers and Freaks: several pay well and count toward 100 percent.
Part two

GTA Online

One big repeatable heist plus a stack of businesses that earn while you do other things. Payouts are approximate because Rockstar adjusts them, but these methods stay strong through updates.

BEST SOLO

The Cayo Perico Heist

The best repeatable earner for solo players. You buy a Kosatka submarine to unlock it, then run the heist end to end on your own, roughly one to two million dollars per run depending on the primary target and how much secondary loot you grab. Learn the stealth route once and it becomes a reliable payday you can repeat.

Passive businesses (money while you play)

  • Nightclub: the best passive income in the game once your other businesses feed it.
  • Acid Lab: cheap to start from the First Dose missions, great value for the effort.
  • Bunker: steady gunrunning income, strongest when you buy supplies.
  • Cocaine Lockup: the top earner among the original MC businesses.

Contracts and other heists

The Agency's Dr. Dre contract and the Auto Shop contracts are reliable million-ish payouts solo or with a group. The Diamond Casino Heist still pays well with a crew. Mix a repeatable heist with passive businesses and you have steady income without grinding one thing forever.

These methods are community-established knowledge refined by players over years. The embedded videos credit the creators who made the definitive guides, and all views and ad revenue go to them. Payouts, especially in GTA Online, change with game updates.
